本次世乒赛上海人王励勤夺得了最高荣誉,不仅极富象征意义,更是一种宿命的召唤。光绪三十年(1904年),上海四马路王记文具店的老板去日本做生意,购回10套乒乓球器材,陈列店中,为了招徕顾客,王励勤的本家王老板亲自挥拍示范。于是,中国乒乓球运动的第一颗火种,在十里洋场的上海悄然播撒。百年之后的2003年5月,在花都巴黎,前来观摩第47届世乒赛的中国乒协主席、上海人徐寅生信步走进中国队驻地附近的一家咖啡厅,看到李富荣、张燮林、曹燕华、施之皓等人围坐聊天,老徐有感而发,用上海话讲道:“介许多上海人!”
