OBJECTIVE: To compare the activation of brain functional regions of BOLD fMRI in two different modes of language tasks and to explore the significance of these functional regions in language processing. Methods Eight right-handed healthy volunteers were performed BOLD fMRI scanning while performing image naming and word association task respectively. The resulting raw image data was processed by neurofunctional image analysis software to generate a brain activation map of both tasks for controlled studies. Results The brain regions activated by word association mainly included bilateral frontal medial frontal motor area (SMA), bilateral central front-back movement area (BA6) (left-side right significantly), left occipital cortex (BA18,19) , Left inferior frontal gyrus (BA45, 47), left lateral lobular (BA13), bilateral upper cerebellum. Image naming activated brain areas mainly bilateral medial frontal SMA area, left inferior frontal gyrus (BA44), bilateral occipital lobe middle cortex (BA18,19), bilateral central anterior back (BA6), bilateral Upper part of the cerebellum. Picture naming activates the occipital lobe more clearly than word association, while word association activates brain regions related to semantic phonetic processing more clearly than images, and has obvious predominance hemisphere lateralization features. Conclusion The above two linguistic tasks activate a neural network of multiple brain regions involved in language processing. Brain activation in both language tasks reflects their relatively unique cognitive components and processes.
