Japan’s withdrawal from the regulatory process for the telecommunications industry has begun for quite some time, but progress has been slow. Tokyo’s Japan Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) was privatized a few years ago, but the government still owns 60% of its shares. Many of the government restrictions on cellular phones were lifted in April last year, while also allowing the sale of cellular phones to users. However, despite the emergence of new companies, NTT seems to have the largest share of this market for quite some time. In the new field of personal hand-held telephone systems, commercial services have not yet begun. Some small young companies, such as DDI in Tokyo, appear to have achieved good results.
