Based on the primary culture of fetal rat cerebral cortex in 16-day gestational age in vitro, we observed the effects of phenylalanine and phenylacetic acid at a concentration of 0.6 mg on developing brain neurons. The results showed that the specific binding amount of tetanus toxin and the special intake of 3H-GABA were decreased after cultured for 14-18 days in phenylalanine and phenylacetic acid. Choline acetyltransferase and glutamic acid Decarboxylase activity decreased. It is speculated that the above changes are due to a decrease in the number of neurons but not glial cells. Phenylacetic acid is more potent than phenylalanine in immature brain neurons.
