Tatyana Tolstoya’s creations are often classified as “feminine literature.” This article chooses the short poem “The poet and the muse” as the object, analyzes how the heroine’s “romantic love” imagination is restricted by literary works, popular concepts and conventions, and then simplifies life to mechanical imitation and reproduction of a particular “formula.” Tolstoy’s creation goes beyond the category of “feminine literature” that emphasizes gender experience. Instead, he takes the predicament of women in their pursuit of love and marriage and demonstrates the dilemma of being inundated by “texts” and losing their individuality in the current cultural context.
