This article makes a preliminary study on the similarities and differences between the use of parentheses and their motivation in the English translations of Chorley and Hawthorne in A Dream of Red Mansions. The study found that: first, the total number of parentheses in Joe’s translation is four times that of Huo’s version; secondly, the parentheses in Joe’s translation note and explanations explain the addition, repeat the original content of the three categories, the highest proportion of the second category, Only explain and repeat the original content of the two categories, the latter category is slightly higher than the previous category. Both translators use parentheses to serve their target readers, but Joe’s target audience is English students who study Chinese, and Hawish’s book is a popular reader. Compared with Qiao’s, Hoe’s use of parentheses less because he thinks that the excessive interpretation will bind him as a translator’s hands and feet, not conducive to freedom of expression.
