Current Management Policies The key to maintaining the competitive position of U.S. biotechnology in international markets remains the need to strongly support basic and research training. In fiscal year 1990, the federal government invested about 3.5 billion U.S. dollars in biotechnology research. 80% of which is funded by the National Institutes of Health. One of the most far-reaching projects is the Human Genome Project supported by the Ministry of Health and the Department of Energy, which aims to map all of the genes in the human body. This research will provide important technical byproducts for medicine, medical devices, diagnostic methods and informatics. In addition to the National Institutes of Health, there are 11 other implementing agencies in the Federation that support promising biotech projects,
