Caricature Exhibition Held in Cairo on Ancient Chinese Philosopher Laozi

A caricature exhibition on Chinese philosopher Laozi was held in Cairo on July 8, helping promote Chinese culture in Egypt and boost mutual cultural exchanges.
The exhibition displayed more than 30 works by 40 artists from 18 countries including China, Egypt, Spain, and Brazil. These paintings reflect the admiration and love of people from arround the world for Laozi’s philosophy.
The exhibition, held at the Chinese Cultural Center in Cairo in cooperation with the Egyptian Caricature Association, is part of the Sixth International Caricature Forum which kicked off on July 7 in Cairo.
Egyptian caricaturist Omar Seddiq, who won a prize for his works, said that he read about Laozi, and admired the philosopher’s unique hair and beard.
“In my work, I turned his hair into pens since he spread his culture and thoughts...pens symbolize culture and knowledge,” said Seddiq.
Seddiq said he drew three paintings about Laozi, including a cubic portrait that was put on display at the exhibition. The artist highly appreciated such exhibitions, saying that they help caricaturists develop their skills and broaden their experience.
“These exhibitions also help spread Chinese culture in Egypt and boost cultural exchanges between both sides,” he said.

Slovak School Holds Graduation Ceremony for Students in Chinese Classes

A Slovak secondary school, Gymnazium Mikulasa Kovaca, held a graduation ceremony on June 30 for 30 students in two classes who will study all their subjects in Chinese.
The graduation ceremony was dedicated to these 30 students, who had spent the previous year learning the Chinese language and passed a language level assessment.
For the next four years, they will learn all the subjects at the school in Chinese. Learning about Chinese culture is one of their priorities.
Chinese Ambassador to Slovakia Lin Lin, Director of Slovak State Pedagogical Office Ludovit Hajduk, and Chinese Director of Confucius Institute in Bratislava Li Qingfeng attended the graduation ceremony.
In 2019, students from Gymnazium Mikulasa Kovaca won the first and second place in the Chinese Bridge Competition in the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic region.
This secondary school is one of the only two secondary schools in Europe that teach all the subjects in Chinese. The other is Rome Convitto Nazionale Vittorio Emanuele II in Italy, an international high school that teaches science-related courses in Chinese.
The Chinese classes in Gymnazium Mikulasa Kovaca began to enroll students in 2016.

Shanghai Woolen Needlepoint Tapestry Exhibition Held in Brussels

An exhibition that aims to showcase woolen needlepoint tapestry from east China’s Shanghai opened on July 4 at the China Cultural Center in Brussels.
Shanghai’s woolen needlepoint tapestry, a craft that is part of China’s national cultural heritage, has evolved thanks to a cultural mix of Eastern and Western arts.
“This art form is a result of cultural exchanges between China and Europe, and a symbol of our relationship,” said Chinese Ambassador to Belgium Cao Zhongming at the opening ceremony.
Woolen needlepoint tapestry originated in Europe and was introduced in China at the end of the 19th century. In the 1940s, the woolen needlepoint tapestry industry in Shanghai took off.
The works on display, all crafted by contemporary embroidery artists from Shanghai, reveal the integration of Eastern crafts with Western arts in all their glory. Besides recreations of paintings by Western artists, nature is also represented in many shapes and forms.
These exhibits come from the Shanghai Museum of Arts and Crafts, which have been housed in a French renaissance building since 1905. The exhibition will run till September 18.
