According to “The Leading Edge of Exploration,” the global oil and gas exploration costs (excluding China, the Commonwealth of Independent States and Eastern Europe, and India) continued to rise to US$2.5 billion in 1991, a 20% increase over 1990. This is the fourth year since the world’s oil and gas exploration activities continued to rise in costs since 1987. There are three reasons for the increase in the cost of petroleum geophysical exploration: the first is that crude oil prices are basically stable; the second is the progress of geophysical exploration technology to further enhance the reliability of geophysical exploration results; and the third is the expansion of geophysical prospecting applications. Therefore, the cost of petroleum exploration will continue to increase in the coming years. Recently, a U.S. expert conducted a review of the cost of petroleum geophysical activities in the coming years based on the current situation and available data.
