作为艺术的书法,毛笔的运用应该视为手段。由于毛笔具有提、按、顿、挫之特性,于汉字书写的点、划、使、转、牵、带有特殊的表现力,亦由于数千年文人墨客的实践创造,使书法笔法的韵致与内蕴具有了深厚的文化积淀与艺术表现理论的积累,为世界所独有。因此,我们应立足于中国书法的传统,从书法的艺术实践与理论来宏观看待汉字的书法。
