Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released from indoor materials are one of the major causes of indoor air pollution. The release characteristics of VOCs are an important part of the study of indoor air quality. Exposed chamber technology that can be precisely controlled has been successfully used to study VOCs release characteristics. This technique can be used to establish a pattern of VOCs release concentration over time, which in turn can also establish a pattern of VOCs release over time. In this paper, the release modes of volatile organic compounds in indoor materials are reviewed. The basic principle of the release process, the application of influencing parameters and different release modes are expounded. Judging from the current research situation, the simple volatilization mode, dilution mode and vapor pressure mode are limited because they do not take into account the influence of the commonly occurring indoor throughput effect. The throughput effect mode is a more comprehensive release mode, which can well describe the release characteristics of VOCs in indoor materials and has a wide range of application prospects.
