The advantages of representing speech in digital form have long been recognized in digital transmission and telephone exchange. Digital voice technology is now rapidly expanding into new and varied applications for voice communications and human-machine conversations. Recent advances in digital communications, signal processing, computational intelligence and VLSI device technology are encouraging. This article will concisely point out some of the key elements of this technology, especially the focus of current research and potential applications in voice compression, editing and storage.
