Since the end of the 20th century, corresponding to the logic of the development of modern democratic culture, many cities (spaces) have sought to confirm their modern character with public cultural constructions. This intense pursuit of public culture has brought us into increasingly frequent encounters with sculpture in urban spaces. At the same time, the conception of “urban sculpture and public art” has become more and more common in urban culture in China with the trend of urban public art construction. Under this kind of cultural situation, the art of sculpture in China has been entrusted with the unprecedented function of public culture. However, precisely from the perspective of the construction of public culture, we can not but produce such a question: why is sculpture?
