Works by South African contemporary novelist and critic Andr Brink often show strong social criticism. Many of his novels expose the evil of the apartheid system and excavate the complex human nature in the grand historical framework. Based on the critical theory of Western Marxism and the textual analysis of Brink’s different works such as “The Winds of the Winds,” “The Winds and Whispers” and “Fylida”, this essay explores the human nature of South Africa’s social structure revealed in his works Alienation and distortions, the evasion and reconstruction of the public sphere, and discrimination and oppression by the ethnic classes. The analysis of writing in the above three aspects aims at proving that Brink’s writing reflects the profound influence of the Western Marxism in practice.
