Paul Ricoeur did not follow the mystic path of philosophy of continental Europe, as did Heidegger and Gadamer, nor was he sliding into the cynical word-games like Derrida did. Along the new path of the Other’s theories opened up by Sartre and Levineas, he constructed an ethnomical hermeneutic system that opened up the theory of purpose and obligation. As far as acknowledging the respective good and justifiable legitimacy, Ricoeur had the suspicion of relativism similar to that of Berlin and Rorty. To seek ways beyond good and right, Ricoeur’s ethnomusicolics, Gold legal hermeneutics is similar, but similar to Rawls’ theory of justice in academic goals. Ricoeur is unique in responding to Rawls’ theory of justice and is a French philosopher who proactively moves from European continental philosophy to Anglo-American analytic philosophy.
