This month, we are going to take a closer look at After Earth, the new science fiction film starring Will Smith. As is the case with any new film, After Earth has a lot of assets and a lot of drawbacks. Will it succeed at the box office? As of this writing, BoxOffice is predicting a modest $105 million North American gross. That will likely change as we get closer to the film’s release. While we may be cautious about North American potential, we remain optimistic about the film’s chances overseas.
优势POSITIVES:
- 这几年威尔·史密斯的电影产量并不多，但他有着超强的票房纪录，他的科幻类电影表现尤佳。《黑衣人3》在海外业绩不俗，特别是在中国。

- Sony will hope to duplicate the success it had back in 2006 when Will Smith and Jaden Smith starred together in The Pursuit of Happyness. That drama earned an impressive $307 million globally.
- Moviegoers seem to be responding very well to the marketing campaign. Facebook activity in particular shows high levels of interest in the film. The trailers show plenty of drama and action without giving away too many plot details.
劣势NEGATIVES:
- 导演M.奈特·沙马兰的票房号召力已经大不如前，许多观众一听他的大名会掉头而去。索尼在市场推广时隐去了他的名字，但这可能还不够。

- While there should be plenty of space in the marketplace during opening weekend, the film will face major competition throughout June from the likes of Man of Steel, World War Z and White House Down.
- After Iron Man 3, Star Trek Into Darkness and to a lesser extent Oblivion, overall demand for yet another sci-fi film is likely to be less than it normally would be in early June.
