王夫之非常重视情感在诗歌创作中的作用,认为诗歌的基本特点就是表现情感。但王夫之身处明末清初之际,家国覆亡之痛,民族罹难之苦,再加上宋明理学的影响,时代思潮之激荡,使作为伟大哲学家和杰出文学批评家的王夫之关于诗歌情感的思想有着不同于一般的理解。天——性——情——欲,这是王夫之性情观的逻辑结构。他把诗情分为白情与匿情、贞情与淫情、裕情与惉滞之情、私情与道情。民众之“情”关系到国家的兴衰存亡,这是王夫之总结历史得出的教训,也是他反对匿情、私情、惉滞之情、淫情,倡导白情、道情、裕情、贞情的诗情观的根本原因。
