  As we all know, English is an important discipline in the university, and the purpose of learning English is to cultivate students ‘comprehensive ability. At the same time, it can enhance students’ ability of learning and improve their cultural accomplishment to meet the needs of social development.
  1. The Necessity of Improving College Students’ English Learning Ability
  College English teaching methods are different from primary and secondary schools. Most of the English teaching in primary and secondary schools is the use of spoon-feeding, they instill a lot of knowledge to students, students have been in a passive learning state, they rarely have their own thinking time. But at university, teaching methods are guided by heuristics, and students have a lot of discretionary time. In order to take full advantage of the time, students must play their leading role in learning, so as to make English learning easier.
  2. The influencing factors of English learning ability of college students
  2.1 Language Basis.
  As a foreign language discipline, the process of learning English is long, the difficulty is more, so the basis of learning is very important. College English focuses on the practicality of English. If the foundation of English learning is not good, it will directly affect the progress of its English learning, which will also reduce the students’ learning endurance and motivation.
  2.2 The atmosphere of learning.
  The role of English communication can not be ignored. At present, most of the college English teaching are focused on reading and writing. So the opportunities for college students to communicate in English become less, and the role of communication tool is weakened. Because of the lack of language expression, college students’ English sense gradually deteriorated, their interest in learning English reduced, so the time to learn English is also less.
  2.3 Lack of interest
  From a psychological point of view, interest will affect the effect of learning and endurance. If students are not interested in learning English, it is difficult to learn it, it is difficult for students to persist for a long time. So if the students lose interest, then it will directly affect their learning motivation.
  3. Strategies for Improving College Students’ English Learning Ability
  3.1 Improve teaching methods and individualize.
  When college students are enrolled, the English foundation will directly affect their interest in college studies. Therefore, college English teachers need to take into account the individual factors, improve the teaching methods for students of individual differences, to help poor students to improve learning interest to catch up with other students. At the same time teachers need to cultivate excellent students to make full use of the study time, to achieve higher requirements in English learning.   3.2 Create a good language atmosphere.
  The goal of college English teaching is to cultivate students’ English comprehensive application ability, especially listening and speaking ability, so that they can communicate in English effectively in the future study, work and social interaction. Therefore, the requirements have been improved in listening and oral teaching, especially in CET 4 and CET 6, the proportion of listening has been greatly improved. In order to create a good English language learning environment for students, the school can carry out rich English activities, such as English Corner or English Festival.
  3.3 Improve the appropriate learning method
  For learners, good learning methods are equivalent to the sharp weapon of warriors. Therefore, it is very important to help students find the way they are suitable for their own. English is a foreign language, the biggest problem for Chinese students is how to develop students’ English thinking, because this is the basis of English expression. Teachers can provide students with more English reading materials to help students develop English thinking ability, combined with a wide range of training to help students find effective learning methods.
  4. Conclusion
  In short, if teachers want to improve their English learning ability, teachers need to use a variety of effective classroom teaching methods to help them develop good learning habits, so as to improve students’ English learning ability to achieve better learning results.
