Luo Gang, Professor of Chinese Department of East China Normal University, author of “The Mask Behind” and “The Way to Imagine the City” In today’s Shanghai, Caoyang New Village appears to be somewhat decadent compared to the row upon row of tall buildings. The earliest house was built in the 1950s, the latest is 1990, a large set of houses is very small, mostly four or five square meters of small rooms. The only shining is the roadside plane trees. However, as Shanghai’s first large-scale residential community built specifically for workers, its history is brilliant. In the 1950s, it was an honor to be able to live in Caoyang New Village because all the model workers in Shanghai lived in Caoyang village. In the era when the worker was the mastermind, model worker was a glorious title.
