罗贯中在他创作的《三国演义》中已包含有环境改变人物思想行为的意思。他能把人物放置在具体的社会环境中扣紧人物的阶级出身来描绘。他继承《史记》写人的性格的成就，在自己的作品中竭力追求性格的个性化。《三国演义》塑造的几个宰相、军事家和许多武将，都是属于个性化的典型。罗贯中还用创作实践表明，仅仅一般地写出性格是不够的，还应该写出一些重要形象性格的复杂性来，曹操、关羽、周瑜等人物就具有复杂的个性特点。
