A is the symbol of the richest connotation in the Scarlet Letter. It is also the carrier and manifestation of Hawthorne’s questioning the Puritan tradition. Omega is the shape set by Updike for “one month’s sunday.” By applying the symbol of Ω, Updike not only overturned and rewritten the Scarlet Letter, but also conducted in-depth thinking and discussion on the contemporary American faith. Updike subverted the binary opposition between materialism and spirituality in “One Month’s Sunday,” trying to combine spirituality with physicality. At the same time as rebuilding the body, he redefined American religious traditions. The change from A to Ω not only reflects the difference in religion between Hawthorne and Updike, but also reflects the ongoing secularization of Puritan tradition with the development of American society.
