[USA] Forest Products Magazine, 1978, Vol. 28, No. 10 Indonesia endeavored to create a commercial forest base in order to meet its own needs for forest products and expand its exports of forest products. To date, trees with commodity value have increased to 13 million hectares. The woodlands are concentrated in the four islands of Sumatra, Kalimantan, New Guinea and Sulawesi. Among them, hardwood accounts for the majority. Logging of timber can only be carried out with the permission of the government. The Indonesian government once stipulated that the annual timber harvesting target is 30 million cubic meters and in 1976 it reached 23.5 million cubic meters.
