A computational approach has been developed with respect to the choice of complexing agent, which theoretically has the ability to select a given mineral for capture, based on the value of the con- dition constant in solution. As a first application, this system has been used for the purpose of selecting organic ligands capable of generating stable, selective compounds with titanium ions, but not with iron ions, for the purpose of assessing the possibility of preferential flotation of titanium minerals relative to iron minerals. The two reagents selected by the recommended method were subjected to a flotation test in a Hammon tube. For both reagents, the buoyancy test results are consistent with the thermodynamic data. Potential limitations of the use of collectors selected by this method are discussed.
