The full set of industrial structure built on the goal of establishing a country based on trade is not only the foundation of post-war Japan’s economic success but also the root cause of Japan-US trade friction. Japan’s foreign trade under a full-scale industrial structure shows that the elasticity of export revenue is much higher than that of import income, the intra-industry trade lags behind and the developed trade among industries. These characteristics led to Japan’s sharp increase in U.S. exports of manufactured products, which directly triggered the Japan-US trade friction. The structural upgrading accompanying the trade friction in turn led to the escalation of Japan-US trade friction.
