The modern publishing mechanism not only provided Shen Congwen with the opportunity to survive in the modern city, but also caused intense oppression to his early creation. Whether in Beijing early or staying in Shanghai in the late 1920s and early 1930s, Shen Congwen was forced to carry out high-speed, mass literary production in a near-self-mutilation way. This experience not only affected his emotional orientation and literary expression in several geographical and cultural spaces in western Hunan, Peking (Beijing), Shanghai and New York, but also influenced his opinions and attitudes toward the debate on Beijing-Shanghai School from 1933 to 1934.
