The Chinese Legion won 32 gold medals at the Athens Olympics. In preparation for the Athens Olympics, from 2001 to 2004, the total state appropriation was about 6.7 billion yuan, and the cost of each gold medal was about 210 million yuan. Why did the country spend such a huge sum of money to win the Olympic gold medal? This article answers this question from the perspective of analyzing the Olympic gold medal benefit. Athletes compete for the Olympic gold medal event and the result of the gold medal, there is the problem of economic externalities. The beneficiary is not only the gold medalist, but also the state and the related enterprises can benefit from it. The proceeds have both the economic income and the non-economic income.
