《白鹿原》通过对白鹿村社会层面的精心刻画,艺术地展示了传统伦理本位文化在20世纪的终结。作家陈忠实用批判的眼光看待白鹿原上的传统文化,却又对其不无眷念,这一矛盾从全书的许多地方表现了出来。作为伦理本位文化的“圣人”朱先生有着许多可敬的品质。他不愿为官,哪怕有巡抚、县长的垂青,而只愿为农乡、为村民办实事。修县志、办舍饭的勤恳都处于这样的动机。朱先生的品质几乎尽善尽美,无懈可击。白鹿村族长白嘉轩对他钦佩之至。在朱先生的劝勉下,白嘉轩与鹿子霖两家因土地发生的争执涣然冰释。白嘉轩、鹿子霖各自周济被迫卖地的李家寡妇粮食和银元,毁了先前订的卖地契约,帮着寡妇渡过难关。这件事使得滋水县令也大为感动,批为“仁义白鹿村”。
