Here we choose the two stories translated by Wu Jingmei, the first “Happy Club” in the original book and the last one entitled “Two Tickets.” The two closely linked in content and time, constitute a relatively independent complete story. The author split it in two halves, half on the beginning of the book, half on the end of the book, and echoes from head to tail, interposing in the middle a dozen anecdotes of four pairs of mother and daughter, most of which have been translated (see Cheng Nai-shan, Yan Ying-wei, “Three Eastern Women in the United States,” Wenhui Monthly, 1989, No. 11, Wang Xiaolu, “Two Types,” Foreign Literature, 1990, No. 2). Add two here, the reader can have a more comprehensive understanding of the book.
