APeople used to say, “The hand that rocks the cradle(摇篮) rules the world” and “Behind every successful man there’s a woman.”
Both of these sayings mean the same thing. Men rule the world, but their wives rule them. Most of the American women like making their husbands and sons successful, but some of them want more for themselves. They want good jobs. When they work, they want to be better paid. They want to be as successful as men.The American women’s liberation movement was started by women who don’t want to stand behind successful men. They want to stand beside men, with the same chance for success. They don’t want to be told that certain jobs or offices are closed to them. They refuse to work side by side with men who do the same work for a higher pay.A liberated woman must be proud of being a woman and believe in herself. If somebody says to her, “You’ve come a long way, baby,” she’ll smile and answer, “not nearly as far as I’m going to go, baby!”The movement is quite new, and many American women do not agree. But it has already made some important changes in women’s lives and in men’s lives, too.

My brother-in-law opened the bottom drawer of my sister’s table and lifted out a package. “This is a dress,” he said. It was silk, handmade. The price tag(标签) with a high price on it was still stuck. “Jan bought this the first time we went to New York. She never wore it. She was saving it for a special occasion.”Well, I guess this is the special occasion.“Don’t ever save anything for a special occasion. Every day you’re alive is a special occasion.” I remembered those words through the funeral(葬礼) and the days that followed when I helped him and my niece(侄女) with all the sad things that followed an unexpected death. I thought about all the things that my sister hadn’t seen or heard or done. I thought about the things that she had done without realizing that they were special.I’m still thinking about his words which make me realize some new ideas. I’m spending more time with my family and friends and less time at meetings. Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experience to taste, not to stand. I’m trying to recognize these moments now and value them.I’m not “saving” anything: we use our good china for every special event. I wear my good coat to the market if I felt like it. I’m not saving my good perfume(香水) for special parties; clerks in the supermarkets and banks have noses that function as well as my party friends. “Someday” and “one of these days” are losing their place in my vocabulary. If it’s worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now. It’s those little things left undone that would make me angry if I know that my hours are limited. Angry because I put off seeing good friends whom I am going to get in touch with someday. Angry because I haven’t written certain letters that I intend to write one of these days. Angry and sorry that I don’t tell my husband and daughter often enough how much I truly love them.I’m trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter to our lives. And every morning when I open my eyes, I tell myself that every day, every minute, or even every breath truly, is a gift from God.
1. Why didn’t the author’s sister wear the dress in the drawer?
A. Because it was made of silk and she bought it abroad.
B. Because she didn’t want to move the price tag off it.
C. Because she wanted to save it for a special occasion.
D. Because there was no special occasion after she bought it.
2. The words that the author heard through the funeral really mean _____.
A. the time when one is dying is a special occasion
B. there is no special occasion to saveanything
C. being alive is a special occasion
D. people should enjoy every day
3. Which is NOT what the author will do?
A. Use good perfume only when attending special parties.
B. Use good china very often
C. Wear a good coat to the market.
D. Please clerks in the supermarkets as well as party friends.
4. If the author realized that time were limited for something she had intended to do, she would_____.
A. save things for a special occasion
B. put off seeing good friends
C. tell her family members her true love
D. be angry and sorry
