When writing English literature, writers often use figures of speech such as parallelism, analogy, repetition, metaphor, exaggeration and metaphor in order to achieve the best expression effect. This article examines the “thinking as a hobby” by British writer William Golding from a rhetorical point of view. On the basis of analyzing the works, discovering and finding various rhetorical sentences and paragraphs, the article discusses in detail the applications of parallel figures, analogies, repetitions, metaphors, hyperbole and metaphysics in this English literary work And thus explains how Golding humorously expressed the theme of the work through the use of different rhetorical devices. In the meantime, the study also helps to improve people’s ability to understand and appreciate English literature.
