Objective To understand the lead leaching rate and population intake of teabag-type health food and provide the basic data for further assessment of its safety. Methods 18 kinds of teabag-type health foods were purchased from Beijing shopping malls, supermarkets and pharmacies. The contents of lead in the samples and extracts were determined according to GB5009.12-2010. Lead intake was calculated by multiplying the lead content in the product by the product-labeled edible amount and lead leaching rate. The safety of lead intake was evaluated using the provisional weekly tolerable intake (PTWI) values recommended by the Joint FAO / WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives. Results The leaching amount of lead in teabag-type health food was 0.0036 ~ 0.5400mg / kg and the average leaching rate was 5.49%. Lead intake in the population ranged from 0.018 to 4.324 μg, accounting for a maximum of 2.0% of the provisional PTWI and an average of only 0.8%. Conclusion The intake of lead in 18 kinds of teabag-type health food products is safe, but the high lead content of individual products should cause regulatory authorities’ attention.
