在历代方志中，清代嘉道年间阮元主修的《广东通志》是学术界公认的具有较高质量的一部，历来为史志专家所重视。从《阮通志》修纂的时代背景、阮元本人所具有深厚的学术功底及其居中的领导作用、修志班底的构成及其主要成员的学术素养等方面看，阮元修志在主客观两方面都具备许多有利条件。从修志过程中发生的在清代学术史上占有重要地位的江、方之争考察，《阮通志》优长之处与特点很明显：全志体例架构既全面又十分完善；编纂选材相当广泛，具有很高的史料价值；编纂手法方面也很有特点，采用“大字正文，小字笺案”，既能较好地追本溯源，又能完整地表述事物的演化；全志具有鲜明的由专注考据转向“经世致用”的时代特征，反映在具体内容上，就是对关乎国计民生的大事都极为关注，并给予充分的阐述；对于历来方志普遍存在的夸饰攀附流弊则力加警戒，凡辨正与存疑都采取实事求是的态度，并以全局观念克服以偏概全的地方偏见等等。阮元通过修志培育人才、振兴广东文教的贡献应予充分肯定。
