先严冯文潜,字柳猗,1912年至1915年在天津南开学校读书与周恩来是同学。二人虽非同级,但志趣相投,一起开展社团活动,过从甚密,结下了终生的友谊。冯文潜于1915年12月毕业于南开学校,随即考入本校高等予备班学习。1917年8月赴美国留学,入依阿华州葛林乃尔大学,1919年又入芝加哥大学,攻读哲学。1922年秋转赴德国入柏林大学哲学研究院深造。1928年回国,曾在南开大学任哲学教授、文学院院长、图书馆馆长、天津历史博物馆馆长、天津市政协委员等职。1963年4月逝世。 冯文潜赴美后,周恩来亦东渡日本。他们海天万里,相互系念,时有鱼雁往还。此后,几十年中历尽艰险,冯文潜一直精心珍藏着周恩来给他的三封亲笔信、中学时代的照片,贺卡以及一封周恩来给留日同学的信。这些珍贵的文物已于周恩来逝世后在先慈黄扶先的主持下捐赠给了中国革命博物馆。现在家中尚存有原件的复制品。 为了便于有关人士研究、参考现将原信及信中有关人物、事件、背景略加诠释如下。
