It is well-known that certain proteins, enzymes, and metastases of embryonic cells in an individual’s developmental stage are often found in animal or human tumor cells (Fishman and Sell, 1976). We used immunofluorescence to study cultured human hepatoma cells in vitro and found that liver cancer cells have membrane antigens that cross-react with fetal hepatocytes (Shi et al., 1977). To further clarify the distribution of this embryonic antigen on these cell surfaces, we performed electron microscopy using the ferritin-labeled antibody technique.
