唐宋文献中“火祆”一词首见于《周书·异域传》,以后为新旧唐书等文献沿用。陈垣先生1923年发表《火祆教入中国考》,将诸书《西域传》所见火祆、天神、火神天神、天神火神以及国内祭祀之胡天神等称为火祆教,比定为来自波斯的琐罗亚斯德教(拜火教),或径称祆教。长期以来为学术界采信,谈及拜火教、祆教、琐罗亚斯德教时,直接视为同一宗教。始于《周书》的“火祆”之称,正如陈垣先生已经指出,是波斯火神天神的简称,为后来的唐宋文献中袭用,成为琐罗亚斯德教的又一名称。但是唐宋时期关于西域事“火祆”文献,需要具体情况具体分析。
