吴先生名家琭,字玉如,中年号茂林居士,晚署迂叟。是我国著名学者、书家。毕生作育人才,曾任天津南开大学教席、津沽大学文学系主任。1898年生于南京,1982年逝世于天津。一生几经战乱,颠沛流离,然洁身自好,为人所重。先生在书法艺术上所取得的成就是辉煌的。早在三十余岁时,就形成隽永飘逸的个人风貌。中年以后广为涉猎,最终以二王为依归。他书法的最大特点是言心写志,一本诸己。不论篆、隶、草、章,不仅融会贯通,而且皆能以自家笔法、自家面目为主。在当代书坛上,能如此自成体系,是不多见的。先生论书,也有不少独特的见解,他对任何古人,都从不迷信。仅从这里所辑录的文字中,就可以清楚地看出他对前人的批评是十分大胆的;对历代碑帖,也都抱着去粗取精的态度。这些见解,对后学者肯定是能有所启发的。先生生前从不以书家自居,对自己的艺术成果也不甚爱惜。幸赖同门学友相互传抄,尚得保存一二。这里所辑录的,是从百余条书论中选出的,可窥先生有关书法艺术见解之一斑。
