Many platform-type and ring laser strapdown inertial navigation systems (INSs) are currently in use. This article discusses the necessity and the possibility of installing a small GPS receiver in these systems. Advances in technology such as microprocessors, gate arrays and surface mount devices have put existing NIS electronics in a shrinking space. In many cases, enough space is left for a small GPS receiver. Configuring a GPS receiver in the INS can solve many of the combinations of commonly used systems. Due to the short data latency and good control, a close fit between GPS and INS can be achieved. In such a structure, GPS rate assistance is easily achieved. Because all data from GPS and INS can be used at the same time, this approach can also lead to increased adaptability and overall performance. Although the combination of INS / GPS method does not increase the repeatability, but it can improve performance and simplify the structure. Our discussions have mainly focused on the military system. However, the technology recommended is also suitable for industrial equipment.
