Piston ring face is now used in two main coatings: 1. Film coating, used to prevent abrasions generated when running in; 2. Coated thicker hard metal coating to reduce wear and tear. The running-in film is made of ferrite oxide, metal phosphate, dry grease and tin. Run-in coating is generally plated on the middle ring, and wear faster. The hard coating is applied to the upper seal ring and scraper ring and sometimes to the intermediate ring (instead of running-in coating).
