Israel Haimowitz made a deal with his doctor 15 years ago—get me to 100 and I’ll buy you a European vacation. On Sept 5, 2002, Haimowitz is celebrating his 100th birthday. And Dr Robert Drimmer and his wife are looking forward to a trip to London next summer. “I hate to take his money,” Drimmer said, but Haimowitz “would be mad if I didn’t go.”
A Dutch travel agent is offering a holiday package with a difference—a night in a cardboard box on a Paris street. The mini-break, which has come under fire from a French charity for homeless people, is aimed at companies wanting to instill a team spirit in staff. Groups of 10 contes-tants are left “homeless” for one night without cash or credit cards and compete against work mates to collect money by begging.
Can Harry Potter wave his magic wand and revive a dead language? Publishers of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, who planed to translate the adventures of the schoolboy wizard into Latin and ancient Greek, thought it might help, the Daily Telegraph newspaper reported. Au-thor JK Rowling and her publishers Bloomsbury hoped the translations would help children overcome the dread of studying the two ancient lan-guages, the newspaper said.
Inefficiency, mismanagement and three-hour coffee breaks are ruin-ing the Louvre experience for millions of visitors, according to an annual report by France’s government auditors. The famed museum, home of the Mona Lisa, does not know how many paintings it has, how many staff it employs, or how much time they spend on the job, the report says.
