In 1974, South Africa’s Anglo-American joint venture’s uranium-uranium division decided in a mechanized plan to investigate the application of a roadheading machine in heading a single-headed tunnel to increase production efficiency and increase tunneling speed. The first mechanical roadway to be completed at the South African gold mine was a 1,150-meter-long main road with a diameter of 3.4 meters excavated by a boring machine manufactured by West Devon Corporation. The tunnel was drilled at 53 level (1627 meters deep) at Free State Geduld’s No. 2 wellbore and passed through various formations ranging from a tough, abrasive rock formation to soft, crushed quartzite. During the development of the lane (T, D, S), the Anglo-American unit of the Anglo-American consortium in South Africa that controlled the project, gained a great deal of experience in the operation and construction of the roadheader and many of the problems were only found in Deep hard rock excavation only, for these problems, put forward many improvements. The engineering team is convinced that sufficient progress has been made in heading full-face tunneling and that the test of tunneling test done at AAC Group Gold Mine is correct.
