Increasing mill specifications and the resulting technological developments have brought fundamental changes to the tube mill structure. Traditionally, cone-shaped end caps and hollow shafts welded together are replaced by light-gauge steel end caps, with wheel belts and hydrodynamic or hydrostatic lubrication of the shoe support system, but the end caps are stressed small. Installing self-pinions on the drive shaft allows for a uniform distribution of ring gear load along the width, plus other significant improvements of critical components to form combiflex drives.
