Simple and practical and novelty makes ICQ looks very cute. Earlier versions of ICQ used a screaming “uh-oh” to alert users that there was a message coming in. ICQ is addictive. Many adult computer users are hypnotized when using ICQ. Some middle school students also switch to ICQ after using ICQ. The advantage of doing so is to prevent Eavesdropping parents. ICQ is said to be the most downloaded software on the Internet so far, with nearly 1 million downloads per week and a total of over 30 million downloads since its introduction in late 1996. Real-time communication on a computer network is not a new idea. When Arik Vardi, a 27-year-old Israeli programmer, and three of his friends came up with ICQ, it looked very much like the Buddy List (later renamed AOL Instant Messenger). Like Buddy List, ICQ uses a small window to show if any of the user’s pre-determined friend lists are online and then allow them to send short messages back and forth. But unlike BuddyList, you do not have to be an AOL member to participate, and ICQ is open to everyone on the Internet. All you have to do is download this freeware and immediately join it. This new application resonates with technology leaders who are tired of e-mail. The average user is interested in sharing a good URL, transferring files, and starting a share from sites that have shared programs, such as CUSeeMe and Quake. When the user logs in for the first time, the program will prompt them to look at them?
