The Netherlands National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR) recently used thermoplastic composites to develop a spar on a commercial aircraft engine hanger that replaces the original spar made of steel or titanium alloy. The carbon fiber spars are 6 meters long and 28 mm thick and are manufactured using automatic wire laying technology. The study was completed under the Dutch Industrial and Airbus National TAPAS2 (Aircraft Thermoplastic Economy Main Structure) project. The resulting composite spar will reduce manufacturing costs and reduce weight and is expected to be put into production by 2025.
