Intrinsic value and inherent value have important semantic distinction. In Regan’s theory, ethically important is intrinsic value, not intrinsic value. This is because the intrinsic value and the utilitarianism are closely combined, which will infringe upon the legitimate rights and interests of individuals. The intrinsic value is the necessary condition for the individual as the subject of life, and the criterion of the subject of life is the sufficient condition for the inherent value. However, the intrinsic value is not in fact a sufficient and necessary condition for advocating the moral rights of the subject of life. The existence of non-human rights, human rights nor because they are inherently valuable life subject, but rather that they are human beings.
