The City of Fortune is a brief history of the Republic of Venice (687-1797) by Roger Crowley. Hundreds of years Venice rose from a fishing village in the lagoon to a maritime power and opened up vast areas of the Aegean coast. With sly diplomatic means and powerful military capabilities, Venice came from between the East and the West. In addition to describing the military and diplomatic capabilities of Venice, the book also contains extensive accounts of how the Republic of Venice constructs its own political system, in particular the harsh rules that have been put in place to prevent official corruption. Maintaining vigilance on the issue of anti-corruption has become one of the important reasons for the Stable Rule of the Republic of Venice.
