The names of the movies, conveying the audience as much information as they can in just a few words, are as important as the trademarks of the products,so are the Chinese equivalents of the American movies’ names. They are subject to enable the spectators to understand the film better.Excellent versions can be handed down with the films from generation to generation, while unsuccessful ones can totally ruin the brilliance of the movies. And it is a profound art to find a proper Chinese title for an American movie. When an American film enters the Chinese market, its Chinese title often includes three versions, which vary from Mainland,Hong Kong(HK) and Taiwan. But in many cases,HK and Taiwan adopt the similar versions. Here the author gives many examples to discuss the translation methods of the film titles. The mainland’s versions are inclined to be faithful to the original names,or literal translation;while HK and Taiwan prefer employing the free translation, full of Chinese idioms, proverbs and commercial elements. To some extent, the differences reflect the regional flavor of the three districts.By analyzing the differences of the translation, the author tries to probe into their historical and cultural background.
