对众生而言,生、老、病、死,是必然要经历的事情,也是“忧悲苦恼”大苦集聚之根由,佛家谓之“四苦”,诸佛世尊出兴于世,既是要引导众生对治烦恼苦患,令众生从生死流转中解脱出来,是以《长阿含经》谓诸佛常法:“要度众生,生老病死.”[1]从世间法的角度来说,“生”是既定的事实,而“老”与“死”则有不可抗拒的必然性.唯有“病”,其发生具有一定的偶然性,且症状万殊、程度各异,对人的影响尤为特殊.疾病对人的身心有重大的影响,故而它不仅是世间医学要解决的问题,也是佛法要对治的内容.佛教有戒、定、慧三学,其中定,谓止心散乱专注一境;慧,谓如理观照却惑证真;定慧即是止观,也即是禅.智者大师所开创的天台宗就是以止观为核心的佛法修行体系,所谓“天台大师灵山亲承,承止观也;大苏妙悟,悟止观也;三昧所修,修止观也;纵辩而说,说止观也.故曰说己心中所行法门.”
