由于作者与读者所处的社会阶层不同 ,中国古代文言短篇小说与白话短篇小说的创作动机存在着多个层面的差异。前者多出自士大夫文人之手 ,其创作动机源于聚结在他们心头的内驱力 ;后者多由市井文人在书商的鞭策下加工而成 ,其创作动机发自在谋生或牟利驱动下形成的外役力。由于文言短篇小说的作者在创作之初是为了自我把玩或文人内部交流 ,所以 ,内驱力的宣泄与士大夫文人以“消闲”为主要内容的自娱相辅相成 ,同时养成了他们自觉趋雅的风气 ;因为白话短篇小说的作者在创作一开始就瞄准了市场 ,所以外役力的释放要通过甘愿娱人来实现 ,从而导致市井文人不惜采取“媚俗”的方式来获利。另外 ,就作品投放的最终目标而言 ,中国古代两大语体短篇小说之间尚有期待长期“传世”和渴望及时“行世”的差别
