It was Thanksgiving morning and in the crowded kitchen of my small home I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together inside the storm door on the top step.
“Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them. I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals, wet with heavy snow.
“Come in and I’ll make you a cup of hot coffee.”
They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them coffee and bread with jam to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started again on my household budget.
The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?” “Am I rich? Mercy, no!”
I looked at my shabby slipcovers(家具套).The girl put her cup back in saucer carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” Her voice was hungry with a need that no amount of food could supply. They left after that, holding their bundles of papers against the wind. They hadn’t said “Thank you.” They didn’t need to. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful. Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched.
I tasted the potatoes and stirred the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a good steady job—these matched, too.
I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy prints of small sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought. Just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am.

Some countries have a large number of earthquakes. Japan is one of them. Others do not have many; for example, there are few earthquakes in Britain. There is often a great noise during an earthquake. The ground shakes and houses fall down. Railway lines are broken. Trains run off the lines. Sometimes thousands of people are killed in different ways. About 60,000 were killed in 1783 in South Italy. A terrible earthquake in 1883 killed 35,000 people in Indonesia.
Fires often follow earthquakes. The Tokyo earthquake of 1923 happened just before the middle of the day. People were cooking meals on their fries at that time. When the ground shook, the fires shook too. Hot materials(材料)were thrown onto different parts of the houses which were made of wood. Soon 134 fires were burning in the city.
Another terrible earthquake happened in India in 1896. The ground suddenly moved 0.45m to one side. Then it moved back again. It moved like this 200 times a minute. Nearly all the buildings and trees fell down when that was happening.

Technology is the application(应用) of knowledge to production. Thanks to modern technology, we have been able to increase greatly the efficiency of our work force. New machines and new methods have helped cut down time and expense while increasing overall output. This has meant more production and a higher standard of living. For most of us in America, modern technology is thought as the reason why we can have cars and television sets.
However, technology has also increased the amount of food available(有用的) to us, by means of modern farming machinery and animal breeding techniques, and has extended our life span via medical technology.
Will mankind continue to live longer and have a higher quality of life? In large measure the answer depends on technology and our ability to use it widely. If we keep making progress as we have over the past fifty years, the answer is definitely yes. The advancement of technology depends upon research and development, and the latest statistics(统计) show that the United States is continuing to pump billions of dollars annually(每年) into such efforts.
So while we are running out of some scarce resources(少的资源) we may well find technological substitutes(代用品) for many of them through our research programs.
Therefore, in the final analysis the three major factors of production (land, labor and capital) are all influenced by technology. When we need new skills on techniques in medicine, people will start developing new technology to meet those needs. As equipment proves to be slow or inefficient, new machines will be invented. Technology responds to our needs in helping us maintain our standard of living.
72. From the passage, we can infer that this article is probably _______.
A. a part of the introduction to American_______business
B. followed by the passage talking about_______factors of production
C. taken from a learned journal
D. Both A and B
73. Which is the main idea of the passage?
A. Modern technology is the key to the______improvement of standard of living.
B. The three major factors of________production—hand, labor and capital are_______all influenced by technology.
C. Technology is the response to our_______needs.
D. The United States is making great_______efforts to advance its technology.
74. According to the passage, people can live a long life with the help of ________.
A. higher quality of life
B. medical technology
C. modern farming machinery
D. technological substitute
75. From the passage we can not infer that_______.
A. The United States has spent a lot of_______dollars on the medicine research.
B. In the past fifty years human beings_______have made great progress in the field of_______medicine.
C. It is impossible that the length of________human life will be extended no matter whether the progress will be made or not.
D. People will invent new machines when_______they find the old ones are not efficient.

The other day in school, we were discussing jobs. Our teacher, Mrs. Bolt said that career was very important and that it was never too early to think about your life’s work. Most of the young boys really were not too sure about what they wanted to be. But I knew exactly what I wanted to be, and when Mrs. Bolt asked me, I replied“A truck driver.”
“A truck driver?”repeated Mrs. Bolt. “Why do you want to be one, Tom?”
“Because truck drivers are always on the move. They do not have to sit at desks all day. They are out on the road and they see a lot of the country. The pay is good, too. And you never have any homework.”The class laughed.
“Well, Tom, ”answered Mrs. Bolt. “You certainly sound quite enthusiastic(热情的).I guess that you don’t like sitting at a desk or doing homework. Is that correct, Tom?”“Yes, I guess so,” I said.
“Well, since you are so interested in becoming a truck driver, I think you should look into the field a little further. I want you to go to the library and take out a book on truck driving. And I want you to write a paper on it and hand it in at the end of the month.”
