Objective: To investigate the relationship between serum ferritin (SF), γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) and insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: Forty patients with healthy subjects, impaired fasting glucose and type 2 diabetes mellitus were enrolled in this study. SF, GGT, fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and fasting insulin (FINS) were measured to calculate body mass index (BMI) and insulin resistance index HOMA-IR). Results: The levels of SF, GGT, HOMA-IR, FPG and BMI were significantly increased in type 2 diabetic patients. Correlation analysis showed that SF was positively correlated with BMI, FPG, HOMA-IR and GGT (male). GGT and FPG (male), HOMA-IR was positively correlated. Conclusion: SF and GGT are closely related to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus, both of which may be used as predictors of type 2 diabetes risk.
